GenusWinter Ants and Allies (Prenolepis)
Most ants hunker down when temperatures plummet, but not this one. These winter warriors are active in near-freezing conditions while most other insects sleep. They're only found foraging outside during winter and early springβa time when food is scarce and temperatures would kill most insects. Come summer's heat, they flip the script entirely, entering a sleep-like state called aestivation deep underground. It's nature's ultimate seasonal reversal: active when others quit, sleeping when others thrive.
