Here's a cockroach with a genuine superpower: it's amphibious. Found throughout Southern and Eastern Asia—from India to Indonesia to Japan—this litter roach can survive in wet, marshy environments that would doom most insects. Its preference for damp, decaying organic matter makes it a crucial decomposer in tropical and subtropical ecosystems. Amphibious cockroaches show there's no niche these insects can't exploit. They can spend time submerged in water while still breathing, equally at home in leaf litter or muddy banks.
