One of the world's most problematic invasive species, this ant is native to South America but has spread globally through human commerce and trade. These small ants have established thriving populations across Mediterranean climates—from Hawaii and the continental U.S. to Europe, Australia, and beyond. What makes them so dangerous is their competitive advantage: vast supercolonies that overwhelm native ant species, causing devastating impacts on native arthropods, plants, and even vertebrates. Aggressive and efficient foragers, they've transformed ecosystems worldwide, becoming agricultural and urban pests of major concern.
