Despite the menacing name, water scorpions aren't scorpions at all—they're aquatic predators with serious attitude. Known as "toe-biters" for good reason (yes, they will bite your toes), these insects employ a hunting strategy that would impress any apex predator. They're the only water-dwelling insects that breathe air, surfacing regularly like tiny aquatic dragons on patrol.
Found in shallow stagnant water, creeks, and waterholes across Australia, they hunt with precision and defend their territory fiercely. Native Australians have learned to respect anything called a toe-biter—their reputation is well-earned.
