With intricate bead-like markings across warm, chestnut-brown wings, this noctuidae moth makes quite an impression. One of the most widely distributed species in its family, it ranges from Ireland in the west all the way to the Urals in the east, with populations extending into western North Africa and Asia Minor. This extraordinary geographic range makes it one of nature's great travelersβsame species, hundreds of kilometers apart, adapting to radically different climates from Atlantic coasts to continental interiors. First described in 1775, it's a common sight across most of Europe.
