These insects look so much like tiny toads that they earned their name for it—their squat bodies, bumpy texture, and big eyes create an uncanny resemblance to amphibians. But here's where they diverge from their toad lookalikes: they're agile hunters with enormous jumping abilities, able to leap many times their own body length to pounce on prey. They can even swim short distances.

They hunt using ambush predation, leaping onto smaller insects and piercing them with their sucking mouthparts. Found near freshwater streams, ponds, and wetlands throughout North America, they blend seamlessly into sandy and pebbly substrates using their cryptic coloration. Watch for them along muddy shorelines—they're small but surprisingly fierce.
