Looking for pure dragonfly energy? This species is famous for being exceptionally active and restless throughout late summer, zipping tirelessly over bog pools and moorland heaths. Found across the entire northern Holarctic—from Europe and Asia to northern North America—it thrives in cooler, boggy habitats that few other dragonflies favor. The dark coloration gives it the "black" in its name.

Its preference for moorland and bog pools over warmer wetlands makes it a telltale sign of healthy, cool-water habitats. If you're exploring northern wetlands and seeing constant dragonfly activity late in the season, you've likely found one of these restless hunters.

Think you can identify this one in the wild?
