GenusCarpenter Ants, Typical Sugar Ants and Allies (Camponotus)
Despite their notorious "carpenter ant" nickname, most species in this genus don't actually nest in wood—a fact that surprises people all the time. The name stuck because a handful of species do tunnel through timber, but this is the largest ant genus by described species count, with over 1,500 members found almost everywhere on Earth except Antarctica. They're incredibly diverse in nesting habits and ecology, making it clear you absolutely cannot judge a carpenter ant by its common name.
