This is one of Europe's most common dragonflies, instantly recognizable by its unusually broad, flattened abdomenβit looks more like a flying spatula than a typical rocket-shaped dragonfly. Males undergo a stunning transformation, developing powdery blue coatings (called pruinescence) as they mature, making them appear ghostly blue in flight. The distinctive four white patches on their wings provide another telltale sign. Patrol any river or pond across Europe and central Asia, and you're virtually guaranteed sightings.
