This compact predator measures just 20-25mm of shiny, dark armor, prowling through leaf litter and soil across northern Europe, Iceland, and Canada. Originally European, it's been steadily expanding its range across North America at an impressive rate, colonizing new territories each year. Ground beetles are fierce nocturnal hunters, feasting on slugs, snails, earthworms, and other soft invertebrates, making them valuable natural pest controllers in gardens and fields. Seeing them in your garden is a good sign that soil health and predator biodiversity are intact.
