Large, powerful, and aggressive—the brown hawker lives up to the Aeshnidae family reputation. These are among the biggest dragonflies you'll encounter, with impressive wingspans and formidable predatory skills. Found across the Palearctic region (Europe and temperate Asia), this species is a master aerial hunter, often seen cruising high above water in their characteristic powerful flight. The brown coloration provides perfect camouflage against tree bark and vegetation. Despite their size and range, they're surprisingly graceful, performing acrobatic hunts with precision that belies their bulky appearance.
