It wasn't until 1992 that researchers pulled off a major taxonomic surprise: this butterfly was reclassified as its own species rather than just a variant from Asia. This relatively recent recognition means many older field guides still lump it together with its Asian cousins, even though genetic research proved they're distinct. Now properly recognized, this striking red admiral is endemic to the Canary Islands and Madeira, where its populations have diverged beautifully from their relatives across the ocean. It's a modern-day species discovery hiding in plain sight.
