Here's a roach that breaks almost every insect rule: it's viviparous, giving live birth to 18-24 nymphs and actively protecting them afterward—far more mammal-like than insectoid. Males and females form protective family groups in hidden crevices, unusual social behavior for cockroaches. Females are wingless while males sport dark brown wings.
When threatened, it squeaks loudly and releases a foul-smelling defense spray that leaves an indelible brown stain. This hefty South African specimen is heavily armored: stout-bodied with reddish head, brown-to-black segments, yellow margins, and heavily spined legs—a fortress on six feet.
