Don't let the tiny size fool you — this is one of the most wide-ranging blues in the Americas, stretching from Florida's Keys through the Caribbean, Mexico, and deep into South America. It's a habitual wanderer too, with strays turning up as far north as Kansas, Virginia, and New Mexico — impressive detours for an insect the size of a thumbnail. The underwing is laced with intricate stripes and spots that make it look completely different from the electric blue upperwing, a classic double-bluff that leaves predators baffled when it lands and closes its wings.

Think you can identify this one in the wild?
