This Chilean tarantula belongs to a small but remarkable genus containing just four recognized species. Tarantulas are among the largest spiders on Earth, capable of reaching sizes that trigger nervousness in arachnophobes—but they're generally docile unless provoked. Native to South America, these spiders are remarkably long-lived, with some females exceeding 20 years in captivity. They spend most of their time in burrows as patient ambush predators, emerging mainly to hunt when prey passes by. Despite their intimidating appearance, they're more interested in insects than anything else.
