Talk about an accidental import with consequences—this Asian mantis arrived in Philadelphia in 1896 when a plant nursery worker unknowingly shipped it north. What began as a simple mistake has created one of the most iconic praying mantises across North America. These aren't aggressive colonizers so much as effective survivors; they've simply thrived in their adopted habitat. Interestingly, this species was initially classified as a subspecies of another mantis before scientists established it as its own distinct species, showing how even our classifications of nature shift as understanding deepens.
