This Asian grasshopper didn't get its name by accident—it's a notorious pest of rice paddies that's carved its place in agricultural history. Across south and eastern Asia and into Oceania, these short-horned grasshoppers are capable of devastating rice crops with their feeding damage. From Indonesia to Japan to the Philippines, farmers have battled these prolific hoppers for generations, making them one of the most economically significant grasshopper species in Asia.
