Citrus Swallowtail Papilio demodocus

The citrus swallowtail has two names revealing two worlds: a native of African Rutaceae plants and an opportunistic consumer of cultivated citrus. Across sub-Saharan Africa and Madagascar, this striking swallowtail evolved on wild citrus relatives. When farmers introduced cultivated citrus, the butterfly simply expanded its menu—adapting to our crops while we adapted to spotting it.
The alternate name "Christmas butterfly" emerged from its abundance during festive seasons in parts of Africa. Like all swallowtails, it's a powerful flier with tail extensions on hind wings, and its ability to thrive on both wild and cultivated plants shows how behavioral flexibility lets insects navigate our human-modified world.
