This species is one of 47 leafcutter ant species and a member of the Attini tribe—a group of ants with a legendary reputation for sophistication. Leafcutter ants don't actually eat the leaves they harvest; they farm fungus gardens underground, one of the most impressive examples of agriculture in the animal kingdom outside of humans. This Colombian species carries on that legacy of underground farming ingenuity, managing complex colony logistics in tropical ecosystems.
