Don't let the simple name fool you—this tiny damselfly has an enormous range, found everywhere from Turkey to Russia to South Korea across the Palearctic. At just 29-36mm long, they're incredibly small—smaller than your fingernail—yet they're one of the most abundant damselflies across their entire range. Scientists value them as important indicators of ecosystem health and climate change.
Their sensitivity to water quality and climate shifts makes them canaries in the coal mine for freshwater ecosystems.
