With roughly 225 described species in its genus, you might expect each Delias butterfly to be rare and specialized. Not this one. The common Jezebel is among the most abundant of all its cousins, a pierid butterfly thriving across south and southeast Asia. From India's plains to Sri Lanka's forests, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Myanmar, and Thailand, this remarkably successful species dominates non-arid regions wherever it appears. The genus itself is so rich and diverse that scientists often study multiple species together—making the common Jezebel's dominance within this accomplished family even more impressive.
