Common Striped Woodlouse Philoscia muscorum

Don't let the name fool you—these little crustaceans earned the nickname 'fast woodlouse' because they're speedsters in the woodlouse world. While most of their relatives plod along at a snail's pace, this species zips around with surprising agility, making it an efficient scavenger in damp forests and gardens.
Originally a European native, this species has become a globe-trotter, establishing itself across North America from Washington state to Nova Scotia. Quite the relocation for a creature barely bigger than a pencil eraser! You'll find them in woodpiles, under bark, and in leaf litter wherever it's moist and dark. These harmless decomposers do important cleanup work in ecosystems on both sides of the Atlantic.
