This butterfly answers to two equally intriguing names: the Compton tortoiseshell and the false comma, hints at its role within the tortoiseshell and angle-wing butterfly group. Its scientific identity has even been debated by experts—sometimes called Nymphalis l-album, sometimes N. vaualbum—a reminder that even well-studied butterflies can surprise systematists. As a member of the Nymphalidae family, it represents the tortoiseshell group's incredible diversity.
These robust butterflies are woodland dwellers across temperate regions, often overwintering in protected spots like tree cavities. Their strong, fluttering flight and preference for fruit over nectar make them distinctly different from many other butterfly species.
