These damselflies are named for their spectacular wings—deep ebony-black wings that shimmer with iridescence in sunlight. They're one of about 150 species in the Calopterygidae family, all prized for their jewel-like appearance. They're found across eastern North America, from Canada to the Great Plains, making them a beloved sight for damselfly watchers in their range.

Their broad wings—wider than typical damselflies—give them unique hovering and maneuvering abilities that make them mesmerizing to watch.
