GenusAnacridium (Anacridium)
With a wingspan that can reach five inches, this massive locust-like grasshopper is one of the most impressive orthopterans in the Mediterranean and North Africa. The common name comes from its sheer sizeβit's almost bird-like in flight. Brilliantly colored in greens, yellows, and reds, it's a stunning sight when it takes to the air. They're voracious feeders, consuming significant amounts of vegetation, which has earned them attention from agricultural perspectives. Despite their intimidating appearance, they're generally solitary rather than forming the devastating swarms of some locust species.
