Those ragged, deeply notched wing edges aren't damage — they're a masterpiece of camouflage. When it closes its wings, it transforms into a near-perfect dead leaf, complete with an irregular outline and cryptic brown underside. Predators walk right past. It's one of the finest examples of leaf mimicry among European butterflies.

Flip that "leaf" over and you'll find the feature that named the whole species: a tiny, bright white comma mark on the underside of the hindwing. This butterfly also hibernates as an adult through winter, emerging in early spring to feed on tree sap and rotting fruit long before the season's flowers appear. It's a scrappy, adaptable survivor.
