With its unmistakable red and black coloration, this firebug looks like it escaped from a warning label. Native to the Palaearctic region from the Atlantic coast of Europe to northwest China, it's been expanding its territory—recently pushing northward into mainland Britain and spreading along the Mediterranean coast. Perhaps most intriguingly, firebugs are gregarious insects, frequently gathering in aggregations of tens to roughly a hundred individuals, creating striking clusters of color across vegetation.
