These long-legged arachnids are often mistaken for spiders and called daddy longlegs, but harvestmen belong to a distinct arachnid order entirely. The European harvestman is now found worldwide through centuries of accidental human trade. Those famously spindly legs look delicate because they are, but they're also highly sensitive and mobile, allowing them to navigate complex crevices. They can shed legs that get caught and continue life without them. Unlike spiders, harvestmen are scavengers, not hunters. They feed on dead plant matter, fungi, decomposing material, and small arthropods, making them valuable recyclers in ecosystems.
