The name says it all: European orchard bee. This is a solitary bee, meaning females build individual nests alone, without any worker sisters to helpβ€”a dramatic contrast to the honeybee's massive collaborative hive. What makes her special is her role as an exceptionally efficient pollinator of fruit crops, particularly apples and almonds. European orchard bees are so good at their job that farmers actually rent managed populations of them, housing bees in special nesting blocks placed near orchards during bloom season. Each female produces multiple offspring but raises them solo, making these bees a master of efficiency. They emerge in early spring, pollinate like champions, and then disappear for the rest of the year.
