The celebrity of European beetles, this iconic stag beetle looks like something from a fantasy novel with its massive mandibles resembling a stag's antlers. Males use these impressive weapons in dramatic battles over mates, locking jaws and wrestling for dominance—nature's version of a jousting tournament. Listed as Near Threatened, this beetle is a conservation priority as old-growth forests disappear across Western Europe.

The larvae live for up to five years in decaying wood, slowly growing into these magnificent adults. Adults emerge on warm evenings in summer, flying clumsily and making the distinctive sound that inspired their name—a powerful symbol of ancient woodlands and the insects that depend on them.
