Named by pioneering arachnologist Mello-Leitão in 1923, this South American tarantula hails from Brazil and Bolivia — regions that host some of the world's most impressive spider fauna. The name 'exilis' likely refers to a more slender body form compared to some heftier tarantula relatives. Theraphosidae family members inhabit some of the most biodiverse ecosystems on Earth.
Like other tarantulas, this species is a long-lived solitary hunter that can occupy the same territory for years. These spiders are adapted to humid tropical forests, where they hunt insects and other arthropods under the forest canopy, contributing to one of nature's most complex predator networks.
