For decades, this southern African scorpion held a record — scientists believed it was the largest species on Earth, reaching up to 20 centimeters long. Then came the plot twist: another species, Heterometrus swammerdami, claimed the crown at 23 centimeters. Despite losing its title, this species remains impressive and popular on the exotic pet market. Its flattened body is perfectly designed for squeezing into tight rock crevices where it hunts. Naturalists continue to admire it, record holder or not — a reminder that being second-largest is still pretty remarkable.
