Talk about a fly with multiple identities—depending on your location, this soldier fly answers to three different common names: garden soldier fly, blue soldier fly, or (in Russian) the spiked lion fly. Its scientific description dates back to the colonial era when Australia was still called New Holland, making the original specimen in the Berlin Museum a piece of entomological history. The description was originally written in archaic German Fraktur script, adding a fascinating layer of historical intrigue to this spiky-looking soldier fly.
