The "gaudy baron" lives up to its flamboyant common name with bold coloration that turns heads wherever it appears. Found across South and Southeast Asia, it was first formally described by Pieter Cramer in 1777, making it one of the older scientifically documented butterflies in the region. As a nymphalid butterfly, it belongs to one of the largest and most visually impressive butterfly families in the world.
