GenusCarpenter Ants, Typical Sugar Ants and Allies (Camponotus)
These ants belong to a genus boasting over 1,500 described species — making it one of the most successful ant groups on the planet, found nearly everywhere except Antarctica. Here's where it gets delightfully funny: despite being called 'carpenter ants,' the vast majority don't actually nest in wood.
Only a few specialized subgroups have the wood-boring habit, meaning most of these ants are just regular ground or rock dwellers sporting a gloriously misleading name that's stuck around for centuries. It's nature's longest-running case of mistaken identity.
