Bold eyespots cover this butterfly's wings—a predator-tricking masterpiece. When a hungry bird or small reptile strikes at what appears to be eyes, it hits the fake markings instead of the butterfly's actual head, often allowing the insect to escape relatively unharmed. This western specialist patrols the sunny fields and scrubland of the American West, its rich brown color blending perfectly with dry grasses and bare ground.
The western buckeye thrives in open spaces where it can spot danger from a distance, rarely venturing into forest shade. Its eyespots have proven so effective at survival that this strategy has evolved independently in dozens of unrelated butterfly species across the globe.
