Here's a butterfly with a genuinely dramatic backstory. In New Zealand, a bacterial parasite called Wolbachia once killed so many males that females outnumbered them 99 to 1 on some islands โ€” but within just a few generations, females evolved a genetic suppressor and the sex ratio bounced back, one of the fastest evolutionary responses ever recorded in any animal. Males are also notoriously aggressive territory defenders, chasing off anything that enters their patch for hours. The species spans a huge range from Madagascar to Australia, and females in several regions mimic toxic butterflies โ€” wearing borrowed danger as a costume.
