This striking swallowtail gets its magical common name from the long, pointed tail extensions on its hindwings that really do resemble a dragon's tail in flight. Found across South Asia and Southeast Asia, there are ten distinct subspecies scattered throughout the region, each adapted to local habitats. What's particularly cool is that a specimen collected from Java became the type species for the entire Lamproptera genus, meaning this butterfly quite literally defined what scientists consider the 'standard' for all dragontails worldwide.
