GenusSnaketails (Ophiogomphus)
The 'snaketail' name comes from a distinctive swollen club at the tip of the abdomen—the hallmark of Gomphidae, the club-tailed dragonflies. This telltale bulge makes identification remarkably easy even for newcomers. These are powerful hunters with vision so sharp they can spot movement from remarkable distances, patrolling their territories with military precision.
They're found perched along vegetation near water, ready to launch ambush attacks on passing insects. The club shape serves males in territorial disputes, where they bob and display their abdomens at rivals.
