This mantis is a master of disguise, mimicking lichen so effectively it becomes nearly invisible against tree bark. Even more distinctive is its hunting posture—unlike mantises that typically wait with forelegs raised, it positions itself facing downward on trees, a posture that seems awkward but apparently works brilliantly for ambush hunting. It's an equal-opportunity predator, indiscriminately consuming any insect unlucky enough to wander within strike range. Native to Florida and the southern United States, this beneficent hunter keeps pest populations in check while remaining nearly invisible to human observers.
