These hardworking tunnel engineers bore into dead wood and bamboo to create nesting galleries for their larvae, working alone rather than in colonies. The genus contains around 500 species in 31 subgenera with fascinating nesting diversity: while most carve into wood, a clever subgroup digs underground nests in soil instead. They're solitary bees, not social despite their impressive sizeβ€”each female is her own architect, builder, provisioner, and mother rolled into one. Unlike honeybees, there's no hive gossip, no queen, no workers.
