Don't let the beauty fool you. This 28-spotted beetle is actually a voracious leaf-eater, not an aphid-hunting ladybug like you'd expect from its appearance. Instead of being helpful, it strips foliage from potatoes and related plants. To complicate matters further, it's a cryptic species complex often confused with a nearly identical relative from Russia, China, Japan, and Korea. The spot count is accurateβ€”but so is its bad reputation among farmers.
