This venomous Australian ant is a champion jumper, capable of launching itself several times its own body length to escape danger or chase down prey. Despite their jumping prowess, they're not tiny โ€” workers measure 12-14 mm long, with queens reaching 14-16 mm, making them quite substantial insects for Australia.

Found primarily in Tasmania and southeast Australia, these ants are famous enough to have earned multiple common names: jack jumper, jumping jack, hopper ant, and jumper ant all refer to the same impressive acrobat.
