This carpenter ant is a desert survivor par excellence. Endemic to the arid regions of Southern Africa, it thrives in the harshest conditions where most insects simply can't survive. What's remarkable is how these golden-hued, hairy builders excavate intricate tunnel systems through tough, often brittle wood despite the intense heat and dryness.

They've adapted their entire biology to function in an environment that would quickly kill their tropical relatives. While other ants seek shade and moisture, this specialist has made the Karoo its home.
