This butterfly earned its alternate name by being a masterful deceiver in the insect world. Using Batesian mimicry, it impersonates another butterfly species—the true erato—that's toxic or dangerous to predators. Rather than evolving its own chemical defenses, this clever mimic gets all the protection by simply looking like something dangerous. It's a perfect example of how evolution rewards trickery: when survival is the stakes, sometimes wearing a borrowed costume is the smartest strategy.
