Here's something genuinely unusual: this moth is the only species in its entire genus—a monotypic wonder in the Sphingidae family. What makes this even stranger is the timeline: Francis Walker described the species in 1856, but the genus wasn't formally established until 1971, nearly 120 years later.

So for over a century, this sphinx was classified elsewhere before Ronald Hodges gave it its current home. The 'ficus' in the common name hints at its food plants, and this moth represents a unique evolutionary lineage—the sole survivor of what was once likely a more diverse group.
