This spider has earned a delightful nickname: the pumpkin spider, because the females develop fat, inflated abdomens that look exactly like tiny orange pumpkins. The gorgeous marbled patterns across their bodies—swirled with yellow, orange, red, and brown—provide perfect camouflage against tree bark and autumn leaves. Found across the entire Northern Hemisphere (Holarctic distribution), they're efficient hunters and harmless to humans. If you've ever spotted a lumpy orange spider in fall gardens, you've almost certainly encountered one of these beauties.
