GenusCalligrapher Flies (Toxomerus)
These hoverflies earned the nickname "calligrapher" honestly—their wing patterns genuinely resemble delicate handwriting when light shines through them. Common across North American gardens and meadows, these flies are masterful mimics of bees and wasps despite being completely harmless. Unlike the insects they impersonate, they're beneficial garden visitors that feed on pollen and nectar, helping pollinate flowers while looking deceptively dangerous. Their brilliant mimicry is one of nature's finest examples of visual deception in action.
