This European and Asian wasp is a master architect, building aerial paper nests suspended in trees and shrubs, and operates on a rigid schedule: complete colony cycles last exactly 3.3 months, with peak activity from May through October. Most impressively, workers forage for food in temperatures as low as 7°C (45°F), making them among the hardiest paper wasps.

Their social structure is equally fascinating, built on a genetic system that creates unusually strong family bonds and colony cooperation—unless you threaten their nest, in which case they become fierce, coordinated defenders.
