These impressive dragonflies get their name from the distinctive spike-like appendages running down their abdomens, with many sporting striking golden rings or bands that make them instantly recognizable. Part of a diverse genus with dramatic regional variation, this species inhabits North American waterways. From rainforest streams to mountain brooks, each member of this genus is a specialist adapted to its local water conditions, making them excellent indicators of pristine water quality. Their bold patterns are nature's way of saying 'look at me!'
